Cold boot is a term used in computer science and refers to the process of starting a computer or device from a completely powered-down state. This means that the computer is switched on after being completely shut down or after a power outage.
During a cold boot, the computer’s software and operating system are loaded into the computer’s RAM (Random Access Memory) from its permanent storage, such as a hard disk or SSD. This process involves initializing the computer’s hardware and firmware as well.
A cold boot is different from a warm boot which is when a computer is restarted without being completely shut down. A warm boot involves restarting the computer’s operating system while retaining the contents of the RAM, whereas a cold boot starts from scratch.
Cold booting is sometimes necessary to resolve errors or to restore a computer that has become unresponsive. In such cases, a cold boot may be the only way to reload the operating system and start from a clean slate.
